IS 12680:1989 WOODEN SOFA-CUM-BED — 

SPECIFICATION 

( Second cover page^ foreword ) — Insert the following after second para: 

'A scheme of labelling environment friendly products to be known as ECO 
Mark is being introduced at the instance of the Ministry of Environment and 
Forests (MEF), Government of India. The ECO Mark shall be admiiustrered by 
the Bureau of Indian Sundards (BIS) under the BIS Act, 1986 as per the 
Regulation No.71 dated 21 February 1991 published in the Gazette of the 
Government of India. For a product to be eligible for ECO Mark, it shall also 
carry the Standard Mark of the BIS besides meeting additional optional 
environment friendly requirements.' 

( Page 1, clause 4.1 ) — Substitute the following for the existing clause: 

"4.1 Timber — Any species of timber specified in IS 13622 : 1993 * Indian 
timber for furnitures and cabinets — Classification' shall be used in the 
manufacture of wooden sofa-cum-bed. 

4.1.1 For ECO Mark, only species of timber as specified in IS 13622 : 1993 
from sources other than natural forests such as timber from industrial and social 
forestry plantations, shade trees from tea and coffee estates, etc, shall be used for 
the manufacture of wooden sofa-cum-bed.** 

( Page 1, clause 4.2 ) — Insert tbc following at the end of the clause: 

*For ECO Mark, the particle board shall conform to the requirements specillcd in 
IS 3087: 1985 for ECO Mark purposes.* 

( Page 1 , clause 43 ) — Insert the following at the end of the clause: 

'For ECO Mark, the veneered particle board shall conform to the requirements 
specified in IS 3097 : 1980 for ECO Mark purposes.' 

( Page 1, clause 4.4 ) ~ Ittsert the following at the end of the clause: 

'For ECO Mark, the blockboard shall conform to the requirements specified in 
IS 1659 : 1990 for ECO Mark purposes.' 

( Page l^ clause 43 ) — substitute the following for the existing clause: 

*'4.5 Plywood — Plywood used shall conform to IS 303 : 1989 'Specification 
for plywood for general puq)oses ( third revision )'.

IS 303 : 1989 for ECO Mark purposes."

at the end of the clause: 

'For ECO Mark, the medium density fibreboard shaH conform to the 
requirements specified in IS 12486 : 1988 for ECO Mark purposes: 

( Page 2, clause 7 ) - Insert the following new clause after 7 and renumber 
the subsequent clause: 

'8. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ECO MARK 

8.1 General Requirements 

8.1.1 The product shall conform to the requirements of quality and 
performance as specified in the standard. 

8.1.2 The manufacturer shall produce to BIS environmental consent clearance 
from the concerned State Pollution Control Board as per the provisions of the 
Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1914 Sind Air (Prevention and 
Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 alongwith the authorization, jf required under the 
Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, while applying for ECO Mark. 

8.2 Specific Requirements 

The product shall conform to the specific requirements given for ECO Mark 
under relevant clauses of this standard. 

NOTE - The manufacturer shall provide documentary evidence by way of certification 
or declaration to Ihis effect 10 the Bureau of Indian Standards while applying for EeO 

Marlt.-

FOREWORD 

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 23 May 1989, after the 
draft finalized by the Furniture Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering 
Division Council. 

Wooden ftirniture is being made in the country over a number of years. However, the sizes, finish 
and ftinctions of furniture items as made by various manufacturers require to be co-ordinated. 
This standard is being issued with a view to rationalize the sizes, the type and functional require- 
ments and finishes of wooden sofa*cum*bed in the interest of the manufacturers and the consumer. 

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, 
the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the results of a test or analysis, shall be rounded 
off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised )\ The 
number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the 
specified value in this standard.

1 SCOPE 

1.1 This standard lays down requirements of 
materials, functional dimensions and finishes of 
wooden sofa-cum-bed used as domestic furniture. 

% HEFERENCES 

2.1 The Indian Standards listed in Annex A 
are necessary adjuncts to this standard. 

3 TERMINOLOGY 

3.0 For the purpose of this standard » the 
following definitions shall apply. 

3.1 Hard Seat 

A seat without cushioning material. 

3.2 Seat Helglit 

The height of the seat means the distance of the 
top of the seat from the floor surface. In case 
of cushion seats or seats with springs, the height 
shall be measured after applying a uniform load 
of 70 kg on the entire seating surface meant for 
silting/sleeping one person. 

3.3 Sofa*ciim-Bed 

A form of sitting room furniture capable of 
being used for sitting, relaxing, sleeping, etc. 

3.4 Sofa Seat 

A seat provided or covered with cushioning 
material. 

4 MATERIALS 

4.1 Timbers 

Timbers to be used for making wooden frames, 
etc, for sofa-cum-bed shall be well seasoned as 
given in IS ll4i : 1973. When timbers are used, 
sap-wood of durable species and timbers of 
noB-darable species shall be given preservative 
treatment in accordance with IS 401 : 1982.

Wood particle boards required for manufacture 
of wobden sofk-cum-bed shall conform to 
IS 30t7 2 198C» and shall be of type FPT, that 
is, jBbit'pressed-three-layer type.

4.4 Block Boards 

Block boards used for the manufacture of 
wooden sofa-cum-bed shall conform to 
IS 1659 : 1979. 

4.5 Plywood 

Plywood required for the manufacture of wooden 
sofa-cum-bed shall conform to IS 303 : 1975. 
Any of the three grades of plywood, that is, 
BWR, WWR and CWR can be used where air- 
drying paints, enamel or varnishes are to be 
used or where the plywood is to be covered 
with decorative laminates* Where finishing is 
to be done with suitable over-drying paints, 
enamels or varnishes, only BWR grade of ply- 
wood shall be used. The plywood used shall 
not be inferior to Type B. 



4.6 Screws 

Screws shall conform to 
IS 6760 : 1972. 

4.7 Adheaives 

Adhesive used for joining 
IS 848: 1974, IS 851 : 197«, 
IS 4835 : 1979.

4.8 Decorative Plastic Laminates 

Decorating plastic laminates required for the 
manufacture of sofa-cum-bed shall conform to 
IS 2046 : 1969 and shall be of the design and 
finish as prescribed by the purchaser. 



4.9 Paint 

Enapiel, polish aod varnish shall be in 
ance with the schedule given in

5 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES 

5«1 The overall dimensions of sofa-cum-bed 
shall be as follows ( see Fig. 1 ) 

a) Seat height : 380 to 400 mm. 

b) Clear seat depth : 550 to 600 mm, and 

c) Height of back 

above the seat ; 400 to 450 mm, 

5«2 Tolerances 

The overall dimensions specified in 5.1 shall not 
vary by more than ± 5 mm.

or veneered particle board or plywood or block 
board with thickness 20 mm with a tolerance 
of 1 mm. Joinery shall be generally as describ- 
ed in IS 384S : 1965. 

7 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS OF 
FINISH 

7.1 Every sofa-cum-bed shall be checked for 
good workmanship and free from any stain 
and warp. 



7*2 Reabteace to Dry Heat 

The test sample surface shall be tested for 
resistance to dry heat in accordance with 
IS 5807 ( Part 1 ) : 1975. The minimum quaU- 
fying average ratings shall conform to 7 of 
IS 5807 ( Part 1) : 1975. 

7.3 Resistance to Wet Heat 

The test sample surface shall be tested for 
resistance to wet heat in accordance with 
IS 5807 ( Part 2 ) : 1975. The minimum quali* 
fying average rating shall conform to 7 of 
IS 5807 ( Part 2 ) : 1975. 

7.4 Resistance to Marking by Oils and Fats 

The test sample surface shall be tested for 
resistance to marking by oils and fats in accor- 
dance with IS 5807 ( Part 3 ) : 1971- The test 
result should conform to 5 and 6 of IS 5807 
(Parts): 1971. 

7.5 Resistance to Marking by Liquids 

The test sample surface shall be tested for 
resistance to marking by liquids in accordance 
with IS 5807 ( Part 4) : 1975. The minimum 
qualifying average rating shall conform to 8 of 
IS 5807 (Part 4): 1975. 

8 MARKING 

8.1 All wooden sofa-cum-bed shall be marked 
with a suitable mark identifying the manu- 
facturer.
